A Half-Day in Chaeng Watthana

Chaeng Watthana isn't a tourist neighbourhood, but if you know the spots you can fill a fun half day here like a local. This route opens with specialty coffee, pays respects at an old Mon temple, has legendary braised goose for lunch, stops at a pastry cafe in the afternoon, slows down by a canal, and closes at a night market. Everything hugs Chaeng Watthana Road, so the MRT Pink Line plus short motorbike-taxi hops gets you to every stop.

A Half-Day in Chaeng Watthana

🔄 Updated 24 Aug 2026

Chaeng Watthana is a government-office and residential district that outsiders tend to skip, but it hides specialty cafes, long-running restaurants, a Mon temple and a night market all along one road. This half-day plan orders the stops so you don't double back — morning coffee, a temple, lunch, an afternoon cafe, a canal-side break, and a night market at dusk. Most stops sit along Chaeng Watthana Road, which the MRT Pink Line runs above, and a short motorbike-taxi ride covers the gaps, so there's no driving and parking to worry about.

The route

Half day

9 a.m. to early evening — coffee, a temple and food around Chaeng Watthana

09:00
Chummy cof & Slow BarStart the morning at Chummy cof & Slow Bar, a specialty cafe in The Compals project in the Chaeng Watthana-Lak Si area. It opens around 7am — order the light-roast House Blend 'Chummy' from Costa Rica, a dirty coffee, or something off the matcha menu, and ease into the day before you set off. From MRT Pink Line's Government Complex station it's a short motorbike-taxi ride away.
10:15
Wat Lak Si (royal temple)Next is Wat Lak Si, a royal temple built by the Mon community around 1878 and the only temple in the Lak Si district. There's a stupa enshrining a relic and old prayer halls for a quiet moment of merit-making. Entry is free and it's open from morning to evening. It sits at the eastern end of Chaeng Watthana Road, a quick motorbike-taxi hop from Chummy.
12:00
Lunch: Beer Phochana (braised goose & duck)Lunch at Beer Phochana, a legendary Thai-Chinese spot at the mouth of the Government Complex soi. Order the braised goose and the tender braised duck, the goose giblets, and some kailan in oyster sauce — around 300-500 baht a head. It's open Monday to Saturday, closes at 6pm and is shut on Sundays; lunchtime gets busy, so allow a little time to wait.
13:30
Baking HomeWalk lunch off at Baking Home, a pastry cafe in Soi Mueang Thong Nivet 1 off Chaeng Watthana 14, open daily until 7pm. Order the Dark Chocolate Cake with a croissant and coffee and rest your feet in the air conditioning during the hot part of the afternoon. It's a short way back west from Beer Phochana, easy by motorbike taxi or car.
15:00
Hidden Backyard Cafe & HangoutIn the late afternoon, drop by Hidden Backyard Cafe & Hangout, a fusion cafe-bar beside the Prapa canal behind Muang Thong Thani. It's leafy and easy to linger at — try the crab-fat chilli-paste pasta or the beef-fat fried rice, and there's imported beer and dessert too. It's open until midnight, a good place to pause before the night market. It's in the Chaeng Watthana-Pak Kret zone, a short motorbike-taxi hop from Baking Home.
17:00
Chaeng Watthana BazaarFinish in the early evening at Chaeng Watthana Bazaar, a night market that opened in 2025 with 200-plus street-food stalls and shops. It runs from 4pm to midnight, so wander and graze across a wide spread — figure on about 150-300 baht. It's near the Government Complex in the Lak Si-Chaeng Watthana area, with an easy ride back on the MRT Pink Line.

Getting around without driving

Chaeng Watthana got much easier to reach once the MRT Pink Line opened, running on an elevated track the length of Chaeng Watthana Road, with Government Complex and Lak Si stations in the middle of the district. The catch is that most cafes and restaurants sit deep in the sois, not right at a station. The easiest way to move is to take the Pink Line and then a short motorbike taxi between stops — fares in this area run about 20-40 baht a trip, which is faster than waiting for a bus and saves you finding parking.

Adjust the plan to your time and style

The route above runs about six to seven hours, but Chaeng Watthana stretches and shrinks easily because everything clings to one road. If you have less time or want a different flavour, swap it around like this.

  • Only three hours: keep Chummy cof & Slow Bar → Wat Lak Si → braised goose at Beer Phochana, then take the MRT back. You still get the coffee, the temple and the district's standout meal in half the time.
  • Cafe-focused: drop the temple and spend the time sitting longer at Chummy and Baking Home. The Chaeng Watthana-Lak Si area hides plenty of specialty cafes in the sois, so you can add a few more stops.
  • With kids or older travellers: stick to the air-conditioned stops with seating — Chummy, Baking Home and Beer Phochana are all comfortable with restrooms — and cut the canal-side stop in the hot afternoon, heading to the night market in the cooler evening instead.
  • Prefer an evening-only version: start at 3pm canal-side at Hidden Backyard as the light softens, then finish at Chaeng Watthana Bazaar at dusk, when the crowds arrive and the market is at its liveliest.

💡 Know before you go: Chaeng Watthana

🚇
MRT Pink Line + motorbike taxi

The MRT Pink Line runs the length of Chaeng Watthana Road. Get off at Government Complex or Lak Si and take a short motorbike taxi into the sois — that's the easiest way, since most places aren't right at a station.

💸
Budget per person

Around 600-1,000 baht covering two coffees, the braised-goose lunch, an afternoon dessert and grazing at the night market. Wat Lak Si and walking the market itself cost nothing.

🕐
Check closing days

Beer Phochana is shut on Sundays and closes at 6pm, so come at lunch for the goose. Chaeng Watthana Bazaar only opens from 4pm onward — arrive earlier and there's nothing to browse yet.

☔
If it rains

The morning-to-afternoon stops move indoors fine — Chummy, Baking Home and Beer Phochana all have covered seating. Only the canal-side stop and the night market need an umbrella or a wait for the rain to ease.

FAQ

How long does this half-day Chaeng Watthana plan take?

About 6-7 hours, running from 9 a.m. to early evening. If you want to linger longer over coffee or the night market, it's easy to stretch out. Every stop hugs Chaeng Watthana Road, connected by the MRT Pink Line and short motorbike-taxi hops.

I don't have a full half-day — what can I cut?

If you're short on time, drop Baking Home or Hidden Backyard first, since they're bonus stops. Keeping the morning coffee at Chummy, Wat Lak Si and the braised goose at Beer Phochana still gives you a real taste of the district.

Do I need to book any of these places ahead?

Most don't require a reservation — just walk in. Beer Phochana gets busy at lunch but the queue moves quickly, so leave a little extra time. The temple and the night market are free to wander into.

Is Chaeng Watthana better on a weekday or a weekend?

Restaurants and cafes are quieter on weekdays, but Beer Phochana is closed on Sundays, so you'd need a different lunch spot then. Chaeng Watthana Bazaar, on the other hand, is livelier on Saturday and Sunday.

How do you get between stops in Chaeng Watthana?

The MRT Pink Line runs the length of Chaeng Watthana Road — get off at Government Complex or Lak Si and take a short motorbike taxi into the sois, about 20-40 baht a trip, since most places sit off the main road rather than right at a station.
