Chidlom Half-Day Plan
Shrines, Coffee, Malls, Book Wall

This plan is built for anyone with half a day in Chidlom-Ploenchit who wants a temple to pray at, good coffee, a well-known seafood lunch, a photogenic bookshop corner, and a finish at the neighborhood's flagship mall. You barely spend a minute in the sun — almost every stop connects by skywalk from BTS Chidlom. It suits visitors already staying nearby, anyone who likes to make a wish between shopping stops, or someone with a free morning-to-afternoon window before an evening plan elsewhere.

Chidlom Half-Day Plan Shrines, Coffee, Malls, Book Wall

🔄 Updated 11 Aug 2026

Chidlom-Ploenchit packs luxury malls, Hindu shrines and good coffee into a stretch of skywalk you can cover almost entirely above street level, but without knowing which building connects to which, you can waste time going up and down stairs for no reason. Here's a route we've actually mapped out — starting at the Erawan Shrine early, while it's still quiet, moving to the Lakshmi shrine on the rooftop of Gaysorn Village, a coffee stop at a roastery tucked in a side soi, a seafood lunch at Central Embassy, a photo at the bookshelf wall upstairs at Open House, and a finish at Central Chidlom, the neighborhood's flagship department store. Every stop here is a real place Chidlom regulars go to, not a spot invented for a photo.

Suggested route

Half-day

Morning to afternoon — Erawan Shrine, Gaysorn Village, Sarnies coffee, Somboon lunch, Open House, Central Chidlom

09:30
Pay respects at the Erawan ShrineStart the morning at the Erawan Shrine, in front of the Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel on the Ratchaprasong intersection. Step out of BTS Chidlom Exit 8 and you're right there. Pray to the four-faced Brahma image from each side, and watch the dance troupe that performs there for people whose wishes came true. Go this early and it's still quiet — reviews consistently note that crowds build up after 9am. Free to enter, open roughly 06:00–22:00.
10:15
Wish at the Lakshmi shrine, Gaysorn VillageWalk across to Gaysorn Village, a luxury mall that feels noticeably calmer than the bigger malls around it. Head up to the rooftop on the 4th floor for the Lakshmi shrine, the Hindu goddess of love and fortune, and make an offering of pink lotus flowers or red fruit, as is customary here. The shrine is open for prayers 10:00–18:00, and the mall connects directly by skywalk from BTS Chidlom Exit 6.
11:00
Coffee at Sarnies RoasteryIt's a short walk from BTS Chidlom to Sarnies Roastery on Soi Ton Son, Ploenchit Road, an Australian-style cafe with its roasting machine set up right in the middle of the room. Order one of the house blends — Mr. Darkside for a dark, full-bodied roast, or Smooth Criminal for a lighter, fruit-forward cup — alongside the Spinach Mushroom Quiche, dense and buttery. Open daily 07:00–18:00.
12:30
Seafood lunch at Somboon, Central EmbassyRide the BTS one stop from Chidlom to Phloen Chit, or keep walking the skywalk over to Central Embassy, for lunch at Somboon Seafood's Central Embassy branch, one of Bangkok's well-known seafood restaurants. It's open daily 11:00–22:00. Once you're full, take the lift up to the 6th floor of the same building.
13:30
Photo at the Open House Book WallUp on the 6th floor of Central Embassy is Open House, an open-plan eat-read-work zone. Walk over to the Book Wall, a two-story shelf of art, fashion and design books inside the Open House Bookshop by Hardcover — the photo spot most people mention here. General seating is free, no purchase required. Open daily 10:00–22:00 (until midnight Fri–Sat).
15:00
Wrap up at Central ChidlomWalk the skywalk back from Central Embassy to Central Chidlom, the flagship store nicknamed "The Store of Bangkok," open since 1974. Sit down at Greyhound Café on the 4th floor and order the Complicated Noodle — soft rice-noodle sheets you wrap yourself — or the fish-sauce fried chicken wings to close out the day. It's open daily 10:00–21:00, and BTS Chidlom Exit 5 is right there for the walk back.

A timing trick so you're never rushed

Almost every stop in this plan connects by skywalk from BTS Chidlom — the Erawan Shrine, Gaysorn Village, and Central Embassy through to Central Chidlom, which links directly to Central Embassy. Rain or shine, you never have to touch street level. If you want the calmest possible visit to the Erawan Shrine, go before 9am as this plan does, and if you want a table at Somboon without much of a wait, aim to arrive right before noon.

Adjust the plan to your time and style

Chidlom lets you walk almost the entire route on skywalks, with the stops lined up from Ratchaprasong to Ploenchit. The order is easy to reshuffle around the time you have.

  • Only three hours: keep the Erawan Shrine → coffee at Sarnies Roastery → lunch at Central Embassy. You still get the shrine, the coffee and a proper meal without walking far.
  • Here for the shrines: add the Thao Amarindradhiraj shrine outside Amarin Plaza and the Trimurti shrine outside CentralWorld in the morning — both sit on the same skywalk as Erawan.
  • With kids: the whole route is air-conditioned with lifts throughout, so you move mall to mall without touching street level. It handles a stroller far better than a market district.
  • Prefer the evening: the Erawan Shrine stays open late and looks its best lit up after dark. Start at 3pm instead and finish there for a different atmosphere.

💡 Know before you go: Chidlom

🚇
Stay on the skywalk

From BTS Chit Lom the skywalk runs all the way to Ratchaprasong, Siam and Ploenchit, so you never go down to the road. It is one of the easiest walks in Bangkok even in strong sun.

💸
Budget per person

Around 800-1,500 baht, since this is the luxury-mall belt. To keep it lower, eat in the upper-floor food halls rather than a full sit-down restaurant. All the shrines are free.

🕐
When it is quietest

The Erawan Shrine is calmest before 10am. The malls peak on Friday to Sunday evenings, so shoot the Book Wall on a weekday afternoon if you want it people-free.

☔
If it rains

Barely an issue — skywalks and malls link the whole route. Only the short approach into the Erawan Shrine is out in the open.

FAQ

Where's the best place to start this Chidlom half-day plan?

BTS Chidlom is the most convenient starting point — take Exit 8 to the Erawan Shrine first thing in the morning. From there, almost every other stop connects by skywalk, so you rarely need to touch street level.

Do I need to rent a car or drive myself?

Not at all. Every stop in this plan sits within walking distance or a skywalk connection of BTS Chidlom-Ploenchit. The furthest stop, Central Embassy, is just one BTS stop away or a continued skywalk walk from Gaysorn Village.

Which time of day should I avoid for this plan?

Avoid the Erawan Shrine after 9am if you want it calm, since crowds build steadily through late morning and into the afternoon. Somboon Seafood can also draw a wait at lunch on weekends, so arriving right before noon, as this plan does, helps you get a table faster.

What do I need to bring to make an offering at the Erawan Shrine?

Flower garlands, incense and candles are sold by vendors around the shrine, so you can buy everything on the spot. Dress respectfully and watch the incense when it is crowded. There is no entry fee.

How much walking does this plan involve?

Not much — roughly 2-3 km, nearly all of it on skywalks or inside air-conditioned malls. It is one of the least tiring half-day plans in Bangkok.
