Best golf courses
in Hua Hin

Hua Hin and the adjoining Cha-am district pack more than a dozen golf courses into under an hour's drive of each other. Plenty of visitors fly in just to play: the courses sit about two and a half hours from Bangkok, the cool season (November to February) is comfortable, and the choice runs from championship layouts that have hosted Asian Tour events to the oldest course in Thailand. We picked six courses that are real and currently open, and we're straight about who each one suits — design, difficulty, location and rough green-fee level. (Green fees shift with the season, so confirm with the course or operator.)

The picks

1

Black Mountain Golf Club

Widely rated the number one course in Hua Hin. Designed by Phil Ryan and opened in 2007, it has hosted Asian Tour events and the Royal Trophy. The 18-hole championship layout runs about 7,400 yards and plays harder than most courses in the area, with doglegs, steep slopes and water in play often. Greens are quick and conditioning stays consistently high; there are 27 holes total. It's the priciest in this group, but the service and course shape justify it for serious players.

2

Banyan Golf Club

Banyan runs close to Black Mountain on conditioning. Opened in 2008, it's a par 72 of about 7,360 yards with holes routed through both valley and ridge. Fairways and greens are kept in excellent shape, and the bunkering is challenging but still fun to play. The caddies here are known for reading greens well, and the clubhouse is handsome with a good restaurant. A strong choice if you want top conditioning a notch below Black Mountain's price.

3

Springfield Royal Country Club

A Jack Nicklaus design on the Cha-am side, open since 1993, with 27 holes split into the Mountain, Lake and Valley nines. The signature feature is the 12 lakes woven through the routing, and five tee sets let it suit both relaxed and ambitious golfers. Conditioning ranks among the best in Thailand. It's about a 30–40 minute drive from central Hua Hin — good for players who want a famous name and enjoy a water-heavy layout.

4

Royal Hua Hin Golf Course

The oldest golf course in Thailand, opened in 1924 and laid out by a Scottish railway engineer of the era. It's a par 72 of about 6,680 yards — shorter than modern championship courses — set on natural rocky terrain and walkable, with the classic feel of an old British course. Its strongest draw is the location: right next to the Hua Hin railway station in the town centre, making it the easiest to reach and one of the cheapest. Best for players who value history over raw length.

5

Sea Pines Golf Course

Run by the Royal Thai Army and opened in 2010, its selling point is being the only course in Hua Hin with holes that genuinely run along the beach. The last three holes are memorable, especially the par-3 17th played over a lake. The land is fairly flat given the seaside setting, but water comes into play on nearly every hole to add interest. Fairways and greens are in decent shape, and the green fee is lower than the top courses. Service is military-run rather than polished, so it suits budget-minded golfers who want ocean views.

6

Palm Hills Golf Club & Residence

An 18-hole course designed by Max Wexler, sited near Hua Hin's airport and about 8 minutes from the town centre. It sits on rolling ground with lakes and a backdrop of hills, and the fairways and greens were recently upgraded. Staff and caddies are attentive, and the caddies tend to speak better English than many Bangkok courses. Green fees are mid-range and access is easy — a sensible pick if you're staying in central Hua Hin and want a round close by without a long drive.

FAQ

When is the best time of year to play golf in Hua Hin?

November to February is best — it's the cool season, with lower temperatures and little rain, so rounds are comfortable. March to May gets very hot, so tee off early. June to October sees intermittent rain, so check the forecast and book tee times ahead.

Which courses suit beginners, and which challenge stronger players?

Beginners or anyone wanting an easier round can use the forward tees at Springfield, or play the flatter, shorter Royal Hua Hin and Sea Pines. Stronger players after a real test should play Black Mountain, known for its hard design and quick greens, with Banyan next. Almost every course offers multiple tee sets to match your level.

Do I need to book tee times ahead, and can I rent clubs at the course?

In the busy cool season you should book ahead, especially at popular courses like Black Mountain and Banyan, which fill up fast. You can book directly with the course or through a golf-tour operator. Every course rents clubs and offers caddies (most require you to hire one), but rental sets can be hit or miss in quality, so bring your own clubs if equipment matters to you.
