A Half-Day in Rama 9-Ratchada

You can cover Rama 9-Ratchada properly in half a day if you sequence it right. This route opens with coffee near BTS-adjacent MRT Rama 9, moves on to the quiet, dignified temple built for King Rama IX, stops for lunch at a kitchen that's been cooking Hainanese-Western dishes since 1932, spends the afternoon cooling off at Central Rama 9, ducks into a roastery near Huai Khwang, and closes out at Ratchada Train Market just as the lanterns switch on — with JODD FAIRS a few minutes' walk away if you're not ready to stop.

A Half-Day in Rama 9-Ratchada

🔄 Updated 10 Aug 2026

This half-day plan suits anyone with only one window of time in Rama 9-Ratchada who still wants a bit of quiet, a proper meal, and a taste of the night-market energy this neighborhood is known for. The area sits right along the MRT Blue Line between Rama 9 and Huai Khwang, so hopping between stops is easy. It runs from morning coffee near MRT Rama 9, to a short taxi ride out to Wat Phra Ram 9 Kanchanaphisek, to lunch at a 90-plus-year-old kitchen, an afternoon at Central Rama 9 out of the heat, a coffee-roaster break near Huai Khwang, and a close at Ratchada Train Market as the sky starts to dim.

The route

Half day

9:30 a.m. to dusk — temple, old-school kitchen, mall and market in Rama 9-Ratchada

09:30
FlowEver Cafe & WineStart the morning at FlowEver Cafe & Wine on Rama 9 Road, where a water channel runs right through the counter with a soft, steady trickle. It's about a 6-minute walk from MRT Rama 9 Exit 3. Order the Iced Chocolate, rich but not too sweet, alongside a slice of Mango Passion Cake. Open Monday-Wednesday 09:00-18:00.
10:30
Wat Phra Ram 9 KanchanaphisekTake a short taxi ride out to Wat Phra Ram 9 Kanchanaphisek on Soi Rama 9 19, a temple built at the initiative of King Rama IX and deliberately kept simple, in line with his sufficiency-economy philosophy. The plain white ordination hall set against green trees makes it a favorite photo stop. Walk a loop around the pond at the center of the grounds — 30-45 minutes is enough. Free entry, open daily 06:00-18:00.
12:00
Lunch: Agave Foomuikee 2Head back for lunch at Agave Foomuikee 2, a Hainanese-Western kitchen on Rama 9 Soi 7 that's been open since 1932. Order the braised beef tongue stew in gravy with mashed potato, the house signature, or the oven-roasted pork ribs. Budget around $7-14 a head. Open daily 10:00-20:00.
13:30
Browse Central Rama 9Walk off lunch at Central Rama 9, which connects directly to MRT Rama 9 Exit 2. Wander into the Tops Food Hall for gifts to take home, check out the FOOD PATIO zone, or catch a film at SF Cinema on floor 7 if you have time to spare. Open Monday-Friday 11:00-21:00, Saturday-Sunday 10:00-22:00.
15:00
Palate Coffee RoasterRide the MRT two stops from Rama 9 to Huai Khwang, then walk about 300 meters into Soi Pracha Rat Bamphen to Palate Coffee Roaster, a house-roastery at the mouth of Soi Ratchadanivet 9. Order a Hot Latte with a slice of cake, or the Dirty Citrus, cut through with fresh lemon. Open daily 08:00-17:00.
16:30
Ratchada Train Market (formerly The One Ratchada)Ride the MRT back to Thailand Cultural Centre and walk to Ratchada Train Market behind Esplanade Ratchada — Exit 3, about 3-5 minutes on foot. Arrive around 16:30, before the stalls fill up around 17:00, and you can head up to the Esplanade car park for the aerial shot of the colourful tent roofs without fighting a crowd. Once the sky darkens the stalls light up in full. If you're still not ready to call it a day, JODD FAIRS Ratchada is less than 10 minutes' walk further on.

Getting around without rushing

Rama 9-Ratchada is easy to navigate on the MRT Blue Line, with MRT Rama 9 and MRT Huai Khwang just two stops apart, and MRT Asok three stops further for a BTS connection. Most stops on this route are a short MRT ride or taxi hop apart, with one exception: Wat Phra Ram 9 Kanchanaphisek sits deep on Soi 19, so plan on about a 10-minute taxi or ride-hail from MRT Rama 9 to get there.

Adjust the plan to your time and style

Rama 9-Ratchada is an office-and-mall district served neatly by the MRT Blue Line, with the stops lined up along it. Reshuffle the order around the time you have.

  • Only three hours: keep Wat Phra Ram 9 Kanchanaphisek → lunch at Agave Foomuikee → Central Rama 9. A temple, a meal and a mall within a few MRT stops.
  • Here for the night market: shift the whole plan later and give Ratchada Train Market more time, since it only opens in the evening and is what most people come for.
  • With kids: focus on Central Rama 9 for air conditioning and variety, and cut the diner and the crowded night market.
  • Cafe-focused: give FlowEver Cafe and Palate Coffee Roaster more time — both are local favourites — and walk the mall quickly.

💡 Know before you go: Rama 9-Ratchada

🚇
One line does it all

The MRT Blue Line links every stop. Use Rama 9 station for the temple, Exit 2 for the mall, and Thailand Cultural Centre Exit 3 for the train market.

💸
Budget per person

Around 500-1,000 baht. The diner and the night market are cheap; the mall is the pricier option. Wat Phra Ram 9 is free to visit.

🕐
Time the night market

Ratchada Train Market runs evening into late and often closes on some early-week days, so check the days first. The temple and the mall open daily.

☔
If it rains

Central Rama 9 connects directly to the MRT and is fully indoors — use it as the fallback. The train market is open-air and best postponed if the rain is heavy.

FAQ

How long does this Rama 9-Ratchada half-day plan take?

About 7 hours, running from 9:30 a.m. to roughly 7 p.m. To trim it down to a true half day, skip the afternoon coffee stop at Palate Coffee Roaster and head straight from Central Rama 9 to Ratchada Train Market in the early evening instead.

I don't have a full half-day — what can I cut?

If you're short on time, drop Wat Phra Ram 9 Kanchanaphisek first, since it's the furthest stop and needs a taxi ride. Keeping just the morning coffee, the old-school kitchen lunch, Central Rama 9 and the closing market still gives you a real taste of the neighborhood.

What time does Ratchada Train Market get going, and will I have to wait for stalls to open?

The market runs in full swing roughly 17:00-01:00 daily. Arriving at 16:30 as this plan suggests puts you there right as vendors are setting up — not yet crowded, and a good window for the aerial photo from the Esplanade car park before it gets busy.

Is Ratchada Train Market still open?

The night market by Thailand Cultural Centre has changed operators and names several times. Check its current status and opening days before every visit, as the hours shift with the season and management.

Does this plan suit someone staying around Ratchada?

Very well — every stop is on the MRT Blue Line, which most Ratchada-Rama 9 hotels can reach without multiple transfers.
