The charm of Roi Et is that everything sits together in the old city, within a radius of just a few kilometers — driving from one spot to the next rarely takes more than 10 minutes. That means a one-day plan here doesn't have to feel rushed the way it would in a big city. We've ordered things so you start the morning with the sights that need a bit of walking, then ease down into a café and a lakeside stroll by evening, when the sun is low, the breeze is cool, and walking feels much nicer.
The one-day plan at a glance
- Morning — breakfast in town, then up Roi Et Tower (Ho Wot 101) for city views while the sky is still clear
- Late morning–midday — pay respects to the giant Buddha at Wat Burapha, then find lunch around the old city
- Afternoon — duck into a café out of the heat, wander the old town, pick up some souvenirs
- Evening — finish at Bueng Phlan Chai: walk the lake loop, pay respects at the city-pillar shrine, and catch the late light

How to time the day right
If you want good photos and nice light at the tower, go in the morning or save it for dusk to see the city lit up. But if you can only pick one window on a single day, go in the morning — the sky is clearer and there are fewer people. Leave Bueng Phlan Chai for the evening, when the sun is soft and walking is at its best.

Roi Et Tower (Ho Wot 101) — how to go up, what to see
Roi Et Tower (Ho Wot 101) is an observation tower shaped after the "wot," a traditional Isan reed instrument, standing tall in the middle of town so you can spot it from far off. From the top floor you get a 360° view over Roi Et — Bueng Phlan Chai, temple roofs, and the rice fields ringing the city on a clear day. It's a great way to get the lay of the land before you head down to explore on foot.
- Hours — tickets sold 09:00–19:00, viewing 10:00–20:00, open daily
- Admission — adults 50 THB, students and seniors 40 THB; young children, people with disabilities, and anyone 70 and over free
- Tip — mornings give crisp, clear views; near dusk you get the city lights. Take your pick.
Bueng Phlan Chai — the heart of Roi Et
Bueng Phlan Chai is the big lake at the center of town, with an island in the middle laid out as a public park, shaded by trees and flowering plants. It's where locals come to walk and exercise, bring the family to relax, and where the province holds its festivals. On the island sits the city-pillar shrine that townsfolk revere, and you can rent pedal boats out on the water. Evening is the best time — cool breeze, soft light, an easy walk around the lake to round off the trip nicely.
Straight talk
Roi Et isn't a city of grand, big-ticket sights. Its charm is in the ease — a small town that's simple to walk. Come with the mindset of relaxing and chilling out and you'll enjoy it, but if you're hoping for a packed day of activities you may find you've seen it all quickly. Build in time for cafés and good food to make the most of it.
Getting around the city
- Own car — the easiest option; parking is easy to find at the sights, and the distances between them are very short
- Rental motorbike — available in town, nimble, and well suited to a one-day visit
- On foot — the main sights in town are close together and walkable if it's not too hot
