A Walking Plan for Roi Et Town
Bueng Phlan Chai · Roi Et Tower · Cafes · Night Market

Roi Et is a small town that is more fun to explore on foot than you would expect, because the good stuff is clustered within a few hundred metres of Bueng Phlan Chai, the big pond in the centre. It is a short walk from the pond to Roi Et Tower, and there are several cafes in the same lanes to duck into when the sun is out. On Friday and Saturday evenings the Saket Nakhon walking street adds somewhere to eat and stroll. This plan loops you around so you start fresh in the cool morning and finish at the market in the evening, with no driving in circles. One pair of sneakers will see you through the whole day.

A Walking Plan for Roi Et Town Bueng Phlan Chai · Roi Et Tower · Cafes · Night Market

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

The nice thing about doing Roi Et on foot is that the main sights cluster around Bueng Phlan Chai, the pond at the centre of town. Roi Et Tower sits on one side of the pond, while the town temples, cafes and food streets are not far off, and many stretches are easy to walk between with no time wasted hunting for parking. We ordered the day so the parts that take some energy fall in the morning while the air is still cool, then ease off into cafes and the night market, so you finish the day with your legs still in good shape.

The walking plan at a glance

  • Morning — walk around Bueng Phlan Chai while it is cool and pay respects at the City Pillar Shrine on the island in the middle of the pond
  • Late morning — climb Roi Et Tower for the 360-degree view while the sky is clear and the crowds are thin
  • Midday–afternoon — have lunch in town, then escape the sun in a cafe, sip a coffee and rest your legs
  • Evening — walk the night market / Saket Nakhon walking street, eat local food and end the day by the pond

Below we split this into two plans. The first is a standard half-day to full-day walk. The second is for anyone who happens to come on a Friday or Saturday when the walking street is on, so you catch the night market too. If you come on a weekday, check the closing tip for which markets are open instead.

Plan A — a full day on foot

Bueng Phlan Chai · Roi Et Tower · cafes

07:30
Morning walk around Bueng Phlan ChaiStart the day at the big pond in the centre of town. The morning air is cool and pleasant, so walk a lap for exercise the way locals do, cross over to the shady garden island in the middle and pay respects at the City Pillar Shrine that the townspeople hold dear. The pond is open 07:00–20:00 and entry is free.
09:00
Find breakfast in townAround the pond and in the town centre you will find breakfast spots serving rice noodle soup, congee, hot grilled sticky rice (khao jee) and old-style coffee. Refuel before you keep walking. A simple breakfast runs about 30–60 THB.
10:00
Climb Roi Et Tower for the 360-degree viewThe town landmark, designed in the shape of a wot, a traditional Isan reed instrument, sitting beside Bueng Phlan Chai within walking distance of the pond. Take the lift up to the viewing floor and see the town in every direction. Tickets are sold 09:00–19:00, the deck is open 10:00–20:00. Adults 50 THB, students and seniors 40 THB, young children, people with disabilities and seniors aged 70 and over enter free.
12:00
Lunch in the town centreTake your pick between bold Isan places doing som tam, grilled chicken and laap, or a made-to-order shophouse in town. Prices are friendly, around 60–150 THB per person and you will be full.
13:30
Escape the sun in a cafeThe afternoon sun is strong, which makes it a good time to sit in a cafe. There are several inviting spots around town in different styles, such as Hom Coffee with its warm minimalist tone, Fenway Cafe in a loft style, or Baitong Valley 101 which has built a leafy garden in town. Drinks run about 60–90 THB and you can rest your legs for a good while.
15:30
Stroll the old town and shop for souvenirsWander the old-town area around the pond and pick up some Roi Et souvenirs to take home, from Thung Kula jasmine rice to woven cloth and dried snacks. Most souvenir shops are in the town centre and within walking distance of each other.
17:00
Back to the pond for the evening breezeIn the evening Bueng Phlan Chai catches a cool breeze and the sun softens, which is when the atmosphere is at its best. Sit by the pond, watch people come out to exercise and wait for the evening light before finding dinner.
Plan B — for a walking-street day

Add the Saket Nakhon night market

Morning–afternoon
Follow Plan ASpend the daytime exactly as in Plan A — walk Bueng Phlan Chai, climb Roi Et Tower and rest in a cafe. Just keep the evening free for the walking street.
17:30
Have a light early dinner, or save room to eat at the marketIf you plan to spend a long time at the walking street, we suggest saving your appetite, because there is a lot of food in the market and you will want to try several things.
18:00
Walk the Saket Nakhon walking streetThe Saket Nakhon walking street is the town's big night market, in the centre of Roi Et town, open from evening into the night. You will find local food, Isan dishes, sweets, clothes and handmade goods, with live music to listen to as you walk. The atmosphere is easygoing in a small-town way, so it is easy to graze your way along.
20:30
End the day by Bueng Phlan ChaiBefore heading back, stop by Bueng Phlan Chai to catch the night breeze and look at the town lights and the tower lit up at night. An easy way to close out the day.

Check the day before you come

The Saket Nakhon walking street only runs on certain days of the week (mainly Friday and Saturday, and sometimes Monday), opening from around 16:00 onwards. Check the market's page again before you travel, as the days and times can shift around festivals. If you come on a regular weekday with no walking street, you can still find evening food at shophouses in town and around the pond.

Bueng Phlan Chai — where the day starts and ends

Bueng Phlan Chai is the big pond in the middle of town that works as both a public park and the heart of Roi Et. In the centre of the pond is an island laid out as a shady garden, with the City Pillar Shrine that townspeople revere, pedal boats for rent, and space where the province holds its festivals. The charm here is that you can walk it twice in one day for two different moods — cool air and exercisers in the morning, a cool breeze and sunset light in the evening — which is exactly why it works as both the start and the finish of a walking plan.

  • Hours — open 07:00–20:00, free entry
  • On the island — City Pillar Shrine, gardens, photo spots
  • Tip — morning and evening have the best atmosphere; midday sun is harsh, so save that for a cafe instead

Roi Et Tower — a short walk from the pond

Roi Et Tower (Ho Wot 101) is a town viewing tower shaped like a wot, the traditional Isan reed instrument, standing beside Bueng Phlan Chai just a few minutes' walk from the pond. From the top floor you get a 360-degree view of Roi Et, taking in the pond, temple roofs and the rice fields around town on a clear day. It is a good spot for getting your bearings before you head down to explore on foot.

  • Hours — tickets sold 09:00–19:00, deck open 10:00–20:00, open daily
  • Admission — adults 50 THB, students and seniors 40 THB; young children, people with disabilities and seniors aged 70 and over enter free
  • Tip — a clear morning gives sharp views, near dusk gives the town lights; take your pick

Cafes out of the sun — an afternoon rest

Roi Et has gained plenty of inviting cafes over the past few years. The hot afternoon is the right time to duck inside, sip a coffee, rest your legs and wait for the sun to soften before walking on. Most are in the town centre or in the lanes around the pond, a short walk or quick drive away.

In town

Hom Coffee

A minimalist cafe in a warm tone, with well-chosen beans and both classic and signature drinks. Good for sitting quietly and resting your legs.

In town

Fenway Cafe

A modern loft-style spot with a chill mood and strong coffee, plus sweets to order alongside. Fine for working or meeting friends.

Garden vibe

Baitong Valley 101

A cafe with a leafy garden in town, green and shady with photo corners. Good for a long sit out of the afternoon sun.

Straight talk

Roi Et is not a town with grand, big-city sights — its charm is in being a small town that is easy to walk and relaxed in mood. If you come wanting to wander at an easy pace, sip coffee and try local food, you will have a great time. But if you are after a packed day of activities, you may feel like the walk wraps up quickly. We suggest leaving plenty of time for the cafes and the night market, which is where you really feel what this town is about.

How to walk it and enjoy it without wearing out

  • Wear comfy shoes — the loop around the pond plus the town adds up to several kilometres, so sneakers help a lot
  • Skip the midday sun — from about 11:00–15:00 the sun is strong, so make that your lunch and cafe window for an easier time
  • Carry water and an umbrella — Isan is hot with strong sun, so keep water on you and an umbrella that doubles for sun and rain
  • Start early, finish in the evening — mornings and evenings have the best weather, so put your walking in those two windows
