You get a laid-back cafe, a green park, a proper sit-down lunch, an old shophouse mall to browse, and a temple visit, all within walking distance of MRT Samyan except for one short hop. It works well for students, people passing through on a day off, or travelers already staying nearby who just want a schedule they don't have to think about. Start around 9:30-10:00am and you'll wrap up by mid-to-late afternoon, around 4-4:30pm.
The route
Half-day
Cafe and park in the morning, lunch, then Mitrtown to close
9:30am
Start at Experiment cafe on Soi Chula 50Tucked into Soi Chula 50 behind Samyan Mitrtown, just a few minutes' walk from MRT Samyan. It's a white, minimalist, Korean-leaning space open 7:00am-6:00pm daily. Order the Yuzu Matcha or a medium-strength Matcha Latte, which comes out nutty and well-balanced. Expect to pay around 101-250 baht per person. See the rest of the cafe list for this area.
10:30am
Walk over to CU Centenary ParkA short walk from Soi Chula 50 gets you to this 28-rai park designed by LANDPROCESS, home to the largest sloped green roof in Thailand, a long curved lawn, and a brick-orange steel-frame tunnel that photographs well. It's free and open 5:00am-10:00pm. Give it 30 minutes to an hour to walk it properly before lunch. More things to do in Samyan here.
12:00pm
Lunch at Jek Meng Chicken Rice (two-color)An old shophouse restaurant across from Setabutbamrung School, open here for more than 50 years. Order the two-color chicken rice (boiled plus fried chicken), 50-60 baht a plate, with the tangy pickled-lime soup on the side. Open daily 6:30am-8:00pm, and it's less than a 10-minute walk from CU Centenary Park. See more popular restaurants in this area.
1:00pm
Browse Suanluang SquareA community mall built across more than 10 rai of an old Chinese shophouse neighborhood, just a few minutes' walk from Jek Meng. Wander past the painted roller-shutter photo spot, and stop at Castella Factory or Favorite Friday if there's still room for dessert. Free entry, open daily 10:00am-10:00pm.
2:00pm
Head to Wat Hua Lamphong (a quick MRT or Grab hop)This is the one part of the route that isn't a straight walk — Wat Hua Lamphong is about 1.3km from Suanluang Square, roughly a 15-18 minute walk, or take one MRT stop or a short Grab ride instead. The temple is open 24 hours, with the Ruamkatanyu Foundation accepting coffin donations around the clock, plus a main Buddha image to pay respects to and both Thai and Chinese deities under one roof. The MRT Samyan exit sits right in front of it.
2:45pm
Samyan Mitrtown + Sky GardenLess than a 5-minute walk across the road from the temple gets you to the neighborhood's mixed-use landmark. Head up to the 5th-floor Sky Garden, a 4,500-square-meter rooftop with city views, or pay respects at the Brahma shrine out front before heading in. Open daily 10:00am-10:00pm, with the B1 zone running 24 hours.
3:45pm
Finish at Lhong Tou Cafe inside MitrtownA few steps away on the ground floor, North zone, is this Chinese-style cafe with a wooden mezzanine seating area styled after an old Chinese shophouse loft. Order the Lhong Tou Thai tea topped with crushed peanuts alongside a lava salted-egg bun to close out the half-day at a relaxed pace. Open daily 10:00am-10:00pm.
You won't need to call a ride often
Almost this entire route is within walking distance of MRT Samyan. The one exception is the stretch from Suanluang Square to Wat Hua Lamphong (about 1.3km) — skip the walk and take one MRT stop or a short Grab instead if you'd rather save your legs. If you're already staying in the Samyan-Chula area, this gets even easier, since a lot of hotels here are a few minutes' walk from both Mitrtown and the MRT. And if you're hoping to properly eat your way down Banthat Thong Road too, be honest with yourself about timing — most of those stalls don't really get going until around 4pm and peak in the evening, so it works better as a separate dinner trip than an afternoon add-on to this plan.
Adjust the plan to your time and style
Samyan is the Chulalongkorn University quarter, with a campus park, old-school food and Mitrtown all within walking distance. The order reshuffles easily around the weather.
Only three hours: keep CU Centenary Park → Jek Meng chicken rice → Samyan Mitrtown. A park, a legendary meal and a mall, all walkable.
Here for food: Samyan is thick with old shops around the university. Give Jek Meng and Lhong Tou Cafe more time and drop the temple stop.
With kids: CU Centenary Park has open lawns to run on and Mitrtown is fully air-conditioned — a family-friendly pair. Cut the sun-exposed Wat Hua Lamphong walk.
Prefer the evening: start in the afternoon at Mitrtown, go up to the Sky Garden at golden hour and finish at Lhong Tou Cafe after dark — cooler, and a different mood.
💡 Know before you go: Samyan
🚇
MRT Sam Yan is the base
MRT Sam Yan connects into Mitrtown via an underground walkway, and CU Centenary Park and the shops around the university are minutes on foot.
💸
Budget per person
Around 400-800 baht. Food around the university runs at student prices, the chicken rice and Mitrtown eateries are cheap, and the park and temple are free.
🕐
Duck the midday sun
CU Centenary Park's trees are still young, so midday is hot — walk it morning or evening. Mitrtown stays open late and suits the hot mid-afternoon.
☔
If it rains
Samyan Mitrtown links to the MRT underground and is fully indoors — a solid fallback. Save the park and the temple walk for a drier moment if the rain is heavy.
Staying overnight in Samyan?
Base yourself near MRT Sam Yan and you can start this plan first thing without a long commute. Compare Samyan stays across the three big booking sites before you book.
Start around 9:30-10:00am so you have time for a morning cafe, a walk through CU Centenary Park before it gets too hot, and lunch around noon. That leaves the route wrapping up by roughly 4:00-4:30pm.
Can I do this whole route on foot, or do I need to book rides?
Almost all of it is walkable. The one stretch worth a ride is from Suanluang Square to Wat Hua Lamphong, about 1.3km away — either walk it in 15-18 minutes or take one MRT stop or a short Grab instead.
I also want to eat my way down Banthat Thong Road — how do I fit that in?
Most Banthat Thong stalls don't really open until around 4pm and get busiest in the evening, so it doesn't line up well with a daytime route like this one. It works better as a separate dinner trip after this half-day plan wraps up, since you'll catch far more shops open.
Is CU Centenary Park free to enter?
Yes. It is Chulalongkorn University's public park, designed to absorb rainwater, with open lawns and paths well suited to a morning or evening stroll. Midday sun is fairly strong as the trees are still maturing.
How does Samyan Mitrtown differ from Siam?
Mitrtown is small and food-and-coworking led, with many outlets open late. Siam is a cluster of big malls focused on fashion and entertainment. Samyan suits people wanting a more relaxed atmosphere.
