🔄 Updated 10 Aug 2026

Silom-Sathorn is a neighborhood where day and night feel like two different cities. Mornings bring office workers streaming out of BTS Sala Daeng and MRT Silom, while a Hindu temple tucked among the skyscrapers is already open for morning prayers. Here's a route we've actually mapped out — starting with morning coffee on Sathorn Soi 12, moving through Bangkok's oldest Hindu temple, a loft cafe nearby, Lumpini Park just as it turns 100 years old, a Michelin-listed lunch, and finishing at the 360-degree viewpoint atop the Mahanakhon tower. Every stop here is a real place people in this neighborhood recommend to each other.

Suggested route

Half-day

Morning to afternoon — coffee on Sathorn 12, Wat Khaek, Casa Lapin, Lumpini Park, Somtum Der, Mahanakhon SkyWalk

09:30
Morning coffee at Rocket Coffeebar (S.12)Start the day at Rocket Coffeebar (S.12), a Scandinavian-style cafe on Sathorn Soi 12, about a 5-7 minute walk from BTS Chong Nonsi or Surasak. Order the Rocket's Benedict — a 63-degree poached egg on toast with hollandaise — alongside a hot latte, and take it slow before the walk begins. It's open daily 07:00-17:00.
10:30
Stop by Sri Maha Mariamman Temple (Wat Khaek)Walk from Rocket Coffeebar back toward the center to Sri Maha Mariamman Temple (Wat Khaek Silom), Bangkok's oldest Hindu temple, built in 1879. The pyramid-shaped gopuram gate is covered in brightly colored carved deities. Entry is free; remove your shoes before entering and photography isn't allowed inside. If you want to pay respects, offering sets cost around 60-100 baht. It's open daily 06:00-20:00.
11:15
Coffee break at Casa Lapin (Silom 13)Walk a short distance further to Casa Lapin's Silom 13 branch, an exposed-brick loft cafe tucked behind a building on Silom Road near the temple you just visited. Order the Dirty, the house blend of Thai, Brazilian and Ethiopian beans, or a smoked-salmon bagel if you're still hungry. It's open daily 07:30-17:30.
12:00
Walk through Lumpini ParkTake the BTS one stop from Chong Nonsi to Sala Daeng, or walk about 20 minutes, to reach Lumpini Park, Bangkok's oldest public park. Wander around the lake, keep an eye out for water monitors along the water's edge, or rent a free pedal boat if you want to rest your legs. Midday sun here is fairly strong, so stick to the shaded side of the path. Entry is free, open daily 04:30-21:00.
13:00
Lunch at Somtum Der's Sala Daeng branchWalk from Lumpini Park toward Sala Daeng, about 5-7 minutes, to Somtum Der's Sala Daeng location, an air-conditioned Isaan restaurant that's held a Michelin Guide listing for several years running. Order the fried chicken thigh and the crab and fermented-fish papaya salad; if you can't handle heat, ask for less chili since the house recipe runs genuinely spicy. It's open daily 11:00-23:00.
14:30
Finish at King Power Mahanakhon SkyWalkTake the BTS one stop from Sala Daeng back to Chong Nonsi to close out the day at King Power Mahanakhon SkyWalk. Ride the elevator up to the glass floor on the 78th floor, where you can look straight down at the city below your feet. Arriving now still catches the daytime admission rate of around 880 baht (10:00-15:30), and there's no time limit once you're up there — stay as long as you like, even through sunset.

A timing trick so the day lines up

If you want the daytime rate at Mahanakhon SkyWalk (around 880 baht), get in before 15:30 — after that it shifts to the evening/sunset rate of roughly 1,080-1,200 baht. As for getting around, all six stops on this route sit near three BTS stations that connect quickly — Sala Daeng, Chong Nonsi, and Surasak — plus MRT Silom-Lumphini. Each hop is never more than a station or two. If you're heading to Suvarnabhumi Airport, connect to the Airport Rail Link at Phaya Thai station.

Adjust the plan to your time and style

Silom-Sathorn is the business quarter, and this route strings a Hindu temple, a big park and Bangkok's highest viewpoint into one line. Reshuffle it around the weather and your time.

  • Only three hours: keep Sri Maha Mariamman Temple → Lumpini Park → Mahanakhon SkyWalk. A temple, a park and the city view within a few BTS stops.
  • Here for the view: give the King Power Mahanakhon SkyWalk more time and go near sunset to catch both the daytime panorama and the city lights in one visit.
  • Here for the park and exercise: Lumpini Park is a large central-city green space, great for a morning or evening walk or run. Give it more time and drop one cafe stop.
  • With kids: focus on Lumpini Park in the morning and the lift-served SkyWalk, and cut the temple stop, which is packed during festivals.

FAQ

Where's the best place to start this Silom-Sathorn half-day plan?

Start at Rocket Coffeebar on Sathorn Soi 12, near BTS Chong Nonsi or Surasak — it's the most convenient spot since Wat Khaek and Casa Lapin follow in a straight line before you take the BTS to Lumpini Park and Mahanakhon SkyWalk.

Do I need to book anything in advance?

Booking Mahanakhon SkyWalk tickets online in advance cuts down on the queue at the entrance. As for Somtum Der's Sala Daeng branch, it gets busy during the weekday lunch rush, so avoid the 12:00-13:00 peak if you'd rather not wait.

Can I do this plan on foot without taking taxis often?

Yes — most of it is comfortably walkable. The exceptions are the stretch from Silom to Lumpini Park and the trip back from Sala Daeng to Mahanakhon, where a single BTS stop is recommended, since Sala Daeng, Chong Nonsi and Surasak all sit on the same line.

When is the best time to go up the Mahanakhon SkyWalk?

Late afternoon before sunset gives the most value — the day view, the sunset and the city lights in a single visit. It is also the busiest window and tickets can cost more, so check prices and book ahead.

How should I dress for Sri Maha Mariamman Temple?

Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, as it is an active Hindu temple with daily worshippers. It is especially crowded during the year-end Navaratri festival, so avoid that period if you want an easy visit.
