Suphan Buri 2 Days 1 Night
Bueng Chawak · Sam Chuk · Don Chedi

Suphan Buri sits only about 100 km from Bangkok — an hour and a half to two hours by car — which makes it an easy overnight trip with no pre-dawn alarm or exhausting drive. This plan covers all three sides of the province: nature at Bueng Chawak, the century-old timber market at Sam Chuk, and the elephant-duel history at Don Chedi. The route is laid out so you can drive it in a single sweep without doubling back, with opening hours and entry fees we've already checked.

Suphan Buri 2 Days 1 Night Bueng Chawak · Sam Chuk · Don Chedi

🔄 Updated 21 Jun 2026

Suphan Buri suits a two-day self-drive trip really well, because the sights are spread across several districts. The city sits in the middle, Don Chedi is to the east, Sam Chuk is to the north, and Bueng Chawak is furthest north in Doembang Nangbuat district. Plan the route well and you'll run a single line heading north the whole way, with no looping back. So this plan tackles the city and Don Chedi on day one, stays the night near Sam Chuk, then walks Sam Chuk Market in the morning of day two before carrying on up to Bueng Chawak on the way home.

How to get there

This trip is built for self-drivers, because public transport between the districts is sparse and hard to connect. If you don't have a car, your best bet is to rent one in Bangkok and drive up — it's by far the most flexible. The whole trip runs roughly 250–300 km, so keep an eye on fuel.

Day 1 — The city, Wat Pa Lelai, then on to Don Chedi

Day one focuses on Suphan Buri city and the Don Chedi history side. Leave Bangkok in the morning without rushing too much — the distance isn't far, so you'll reach Suphan Buri around mid-morning, just in time for lunch in town.

Day 1

Suphan Buri city + Don Chedi

08:00
Leave Bangkok, head for Suphan BuriTake Highway 340 (Bang Bua Thong–Suphan Buri), about 1.5–2 hours. Stop at a petrol station for a restroom break before reaching town.
10:00
Wat Pa Lelai WorawihanThe city's landmark temple, home to a 23-metre seated Luang Pho To (Phra Pa Lelai) and a setting in the Khun Chang Khun Phaen epic. Open 08:00–17:00, free entry. Allow about 40 minutes to walk around and pay respects.
11:30
Lunch — fish noodles / duck noodles in townSuphan Buri is known for fish noodles and braised duck. Pick a spot in town with a queue out front, around ฿40–60 a bowl. Eat up, then carry on.
13:00
Banharn-Jaemsai TowerA 123-metre tower you can ride up for 360-degree views over the city, with telescopes to look through. Gardens and a water park ring the base. Allow about 1 hour.
14:30
Drive to Don Chedi districtAbout 30 km from the city, roughly 40 minutes.
15:15
Don Chedi MemorialThe monument of King Naresuan on his war elephant and the Yutthahatthi (elephant-duel) chedi — the historic site of the elephant-duel battle. Open roughly 07:00–16:30, so aim to arrive before closing. Allow about 1 hour to walk around and take photos.
17:00
Drive back to your stay near Sam Chuk / the cityCheck in, freshen up.
18:30
Dinner + restFind a dinner spot near your stay. Save your energy for walking Sam Chuk Market in the morning.

About the elephant-duel festival

If you go in late January to early February, Don Chedi holds the Don Chedi Memorial Fair, with a light-and-sound show of the elephant-duel battle using real elephants and horses, around 19:30–21:00 in the evening — free to watch. If your trip lands in that window, push dinner later and stay for the show; it's well worth it.

Day 2 — The century-old Sam Chuk Market, then up to Bueng Chawak

Day two starts at Sam Chuk Market, an old timber market along the Tha Chin River where people still actually live. Go a little early to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere before the crowds, eat your fill of breakfast in the market, then drive north to Bueng Chawak — the highlight that closes out the trip before heading back to Bangkok.

Day 2

Sam Chuk + Bueng Chawak

08:30
Walk the century-old Sam Chuk MarketWooden shophouses along the Tha Chin River in a Thai-Chinese quarter. Open Mon–Fri 08:30–16:30, Sat–Sun 08:00–17:00. Weekends are busier and more shops are open.
09:00
Breakfast in the marketThe legendary spot is Jek Ao egg noodles, open for over 80 years with house-made noodles and wontons. Or Rang Sirot, the only place selling lotus-leaf-wrapped rice and dry yum noodles · Cha Choet roast duck · old-style coffee from Tha Ruea Song at 10 baht a glass.
10:30
Stroll the old wooden houses + buy souvenirsThere's the Khun Chamnong Chinarak House museum showing old market life, plus traditional Thai sweet shops and mooncake-style pastries. Plenty of cheap souvenirs in the tens of baht.
11:30
Drive up to Bueng Chawak, Doembang Nangbuat districtAbout 30–40 km north of Sam Chuk, roughly 45 minutes.
12:15
Lunch near Bueng ChawakThere are freshwater-fish restaurants and made-to-order spots around the lake. Eating first makes the walk easier.
13:15
Bueng Chawak Chaloem Phra KiatAn aquatic-life and wildlife conservation centre with a freshwater fish tunnel, crocodile ponds, tiger enclosures, and an open zoo. Entry to Buildings 1–2 and the crocodile ponds is 30 baht for adults, 10 for children · the Underwater World building (Sawan Haeng Lok Tai Thale) is 150 baht for adults, 50 for children · visitors aged 60 and over enter free.
15:30
Take photos, pause for a coffeeBueng Chawak sometimes opens free on long weekends — check the provincial page before you go. Closing is around 16:30 (Mon–Fri) / 17:00 (Sat–Sun), so you'll want to be in before about 3 pm.
16:00
Drive back to BangkokAbout 130–150 km, getting you into Bangkok right around evening. Leave any later and you'll hit Sunday-evening traffic.

You can swap the order

If you'd rather make Bueng Chawak day one (in case you arrive early and the weather's good), you can — but you'll have to drive back down to stay near Sam Chuk or the city. This plan heads steadily north to cut down on backtracking and keep the return drive from Bueng Chawak to Bangkok continuous.

Where to stay for the overnight

For the single night on this trip you've got two zones to choose from: Suphan Buri city (more options, close to dinner spots) or near Sam Chuk (wake up and walk the morning market with ease). Both are a short drive from the day-two sights, so pick based on whether you want easy dinner or an easy morning market.

More options

Stay in Suphan Buri city

Plenty of hotels, from budget rooms in the hundreds of baht like Loedsi to small boutiques like Lamun Boutique Hotel, starting around ฿600+ and close to restaurants and the city market.

Near the morning market

Stay near Sam Chuk / riverside

A quieter atmosphere — wake up early and walk straight into the century-old market without a long drive. Great if you want the morning market in full.

Before you go

  • Check opening hours — Bueng Chawak and Sam Chuk have slightly different weekend hours than weekdays, and Bueng Chawak's listed times have been off before. Call to check or look at the provincial page first to be sure.
  • Bring cash — shops in Sam Chuk Market and many entry fees still run mainly on cash. Carry small notes.
  • Weekends are livelier — but busier and hotter. If you can dodge the crowds, a weekday morning is more comfortable, though some shops may be closed.
  • Sun and heat protection — Bueng Chawak and Don Chedi involve a lot of walking in the open. Bring a hat, umbrella, and drinking water.
  • Avoid leaving late on Sunday — the return drive into Bangkok on Sunday evening is jammed. Leaving Bueng Chawak before 16:30 keeps things smoother.

FAQ

Is 2 days 1 night enough for Suphan Buri covering Bueng Chawak, Sam Chuk, and Don Chedi?

Plenty, if you drive yourself — the three spots line up neatly heading north. Cover the city and Don Chedi on day one, stay the night near Sam Chuk or in the city, then walk Sam Chuk Market in the morning of day two and carry on up to Bueng Chawak before heading home. No rushing and no backtracking.

How much is entry to Bueng Chawak, and what time does it open?

Entry to Buildings 1–2 and the crocodile ponds is 30 baht for adults and 10 baht for children, while the Underwater World building is 150 baht for adults and 50 baht for children. Visitors aged 60 and over enter free. Opening is roughly 08:30–16:30 on weekdays and until 17:00 on weekends. It sometimes opens free on long weekends, so check the provincial page before you go.

Which day and time should I visit Sam Chuk Market?

Go in the morning for a relaxed atmosphere before the crowds. Weekends have all the shops open and more buzz, but it's packed and hot. Weekdays are quieter, though some shops may be closed. The market opens Mon–Fri 08:30–16:30 and Sat–Sun 08:00–17:00.

Can I do this plan without a private car?

You can, but it's tough — public transport between the districts is sparse and hard to connect. We'd suggest renting a car and driving from Bangkok, which is far more flexible and easier to keep on schedule. Alternatively, hire a local driver to take you around by the day.

How far is Suphan Buri from Bangkok, and how long does it take?

Suphan Buri city is about 100 km from Bangkok, roughly 1.5–2 hours by car via Highway 340 — which makes it good for an overnight trip with no pre-dawn alarm. The whole two-day route comes to about 250–300 km.
