Thong Lo-Ekkamai Half-Day Plan Coffee, Market, Temple, Dog Cafe
This plan is built for anyone with half a day in Thong Lo-Ekkamai who wants good coffee, a community mall worth wandering, a home-style Thai lunch, some light shopping, a temple stop in the middle of the city, and a relaxed finish with a few dogs. No car needed — the first three stops sit within walking distance of each other in the Thong Lo end, and the last two are one BTS stop away in Ekkamai. It suits visitors already staying nearby, or anyone with a free morning-to-afternoon window before an evening plan elsewhere.

Thong Lo-Ekkamai packs its sights, food and cafes into a handful of sois off the BTS, but without a good order it's easy to waste time doubling back. Here's a route we've actually mapped out — starting with a morning coffee inside theCOMMONS, moving through a home-style Thai lunch built on a Trat family recipe, a browse through a newly renovated community mall, a stop at a temple that sits closer to a BTS station than almost any other in the city, and a finish at a dog cafe where every dog is named after a train stop. Every stop here is a real place Thong Lo-Ekkamai regulars go to, not a spot invented for a photo.
Suggested route
Half-day
Morning to afternoon — coffee inside theCOMMONS, Supanniga lunch, Market Place, Wat That Thong, dog cafe
09:30
Morning coffee at Roots Coffee inside theCOMMONSStart the day at Roots Coffee, the small coffee bar on the Market Floor of theCOMMONS Thonglor on Soi Thong Lo 17. It's a Thai specialty roaster that's been roasting its own beans since 2013 — order an Espresso and tell the barista you want it strong or smooth, or try the Orange Tonic, a cold brew mixed with fresh orange and tonic. It's open daily 07:00–17:00, and this early it's still quiet.
10:00
Wander the rest of theCOMMONS ThonglorTake your coffee up through the other three zones of theCOMMONS, an open-air community mall cooled entirely by natural breeze — no air-con anywhere. Start with Village, the level of shops and juice bars, move up to Play Yard for the kids' zone, then finish at Top Yard, the open lawn on the top floor where people bring their dogs to run in the evening. It's free to walk through, with exposed steel framing and warm-toned wood throughout.
12:00
Lunch at Supanniga Eating RoomWalk or take a short motorbike-taxi ride from theCOMMONS to Supanniga Eating Room Thong Lo, a home-style Thai restaurant built on recipes from the owner's hometown near Trat and Chanthaburi. Order the moo chamuang, pork braised with chamuang leaves for a gently sour, rounded flavor, alongside the fried cabbage with fish sauce — simple on paper but far more fragrant than it sounds. It's on Soi Thong Lo (Sukhumvit 55), open daily 10:00–22:00, and quieter at lunch than in the evening.
13:30
Browse Market Place Thong LoContinue to Soi 15 for Market Place Thong Lo, the community mall Central Pattana renovated from the old J Avenue. Walk under the big trees and shady green landscaping, snap a photo on the white-and-yellow staircase, pop into Villa Market for a few things to take home, or sit down for coffee at a brunch cafe like Bartels within the project. It's open daily 10:00–22:00.
14:30
Ride the BTS to Wat That ThongTake the BTS one stop from Thong Lo to Ekkamai and step out at Exit 3 to reach Wat That Thong, a royal temple so close to the station you barely have to walk. Pay respects to Phra Sapphanyu inside the Thai-styled ordination hall, then stop by the Phra Maha Chedi 84 Phansa Rachanakarin, the golden chedi enshrining Buddha relics. Free to enter, open daily 05:00–21:30 — dress modestly.
15:30
Finish at the Dog in Town dog cafeWalk or take a short motorbike-taxi ride into Soi Ekkamai 6 to reach Dog in Town Ekkamai, a dog cafe where every dog is named after a BTS station — Thong Lo, Chit Lom, Sathon and more. Entry runs about 350 baht, including one drink, and you can hang out with the dogs both in the air-conditioned room and on the outdoor lawn. A relaxed way to close the trip before the cafe closes at 20:00.
A timing trick so you're never rushed
The first three stops — theCOMMONS, Supanniga, and Market Place — all sit within Thong Lo Soi 13-17 and are walkable to each other. Wat That Thong and Dog in Town are in Ekkamai, one BTS stop away, so if you'd rather skip Market Place you can head straight there right after lunch. Weekend evenings get busy and parking fills up fast at theCOMMONS and Market Place, so starting early like this plan does keeps things comfortable.
Adjust the plan to your time and style
Thonglor-Ekkamai is a district of cafes, restaurants and community malls spread along long sois, so some stops need a BTS or motorbike-taxi hop between them. Adjust it to your time.
Only three hours: keep theCOMMONS Thonglor → lunch at Supanniga → Market Place Thong Lo. Cafe, a proper meal and somewhere to browse at the mouth of Soi Thonglor.
Here for the dog cafe: give Dog in Town more time — the dog cafe locals rate most, ideal for animal lovers — and drop the temple stop.
Here for food: Thonglor-Ekkamai is full of Isaan places, cafes and bars. Give Supanniga and theCOMMONS more time, where theCOMMONS gathers several eateries in one spot.
With kids or pets: theCOMMONS is an open-air community mall that welcomes children and animals, so give it more time and finish at Dog in Town.
💡 Know before you go: Thonglor-Ekkamai
🚇
The soi mouth vs deep inside
BTS Thong Lo and Ekkamai are at the mouths of the sois, but many famous spots are far up them. Take a motorbike taxi from the entrance — walking is long and sun-exposed.
💸
Budget per person
Around 700-1,400 baht — an above-average district, where design-led cafes and restaurants run high per head. To keep it lower, pick from theCOMMONS, which spans several price points.
🕐
Cafes open late
Many Thonglor spots open late, around 10-11am. Arrive too early and you may find them shut, so check the main stops' hours before you set out.
☔
If it rains
Market Place and the mall restaurants are the indoor fallback. theCOMMONS is a semi-open mall — roofed but breezy — so move into an enclosed venue in heavy rain.
Staying overnight in Thonglor-Ekkamai?
Base yourself near BTS Thong Lo-Ekkamai and you can start this plan first thing without a long commute. Compare Thonglor-Ekkamai stays across the three big booking sites before you book.
Where's the best place to start this Thong Lo-Ekkamai half-day plan?
BTS Thong Lo is the most convenient starting point — walk into Soi 17 for theCOMMONS first. The first three stops all sit within the Thong Lo end of the route, and in the afternoon you ride the BTS one stop to Ekkamai for Wat That Thong and Dog in Town.
Do I need to rent a car or drive myself?
No. Most of the Thong Lo-end stops are walkable to each other, a quick motorbike taxi or Grab covers any longer stretch, and moving from the Thong Lo zone to the Ekkamai zone only takes one BTS stop.
Which time of day should I avoid for this plan?
Avoid weekend evenings if you want to walk comfortably — theCOMMONS and Market Place Thong Lo both get crowded and parking fills up fast around then. Starting early at 09:30, as this plan does, helps you beat the crowds.
How do Thonglor and Ekkamai differ?
Thonglor leans to cafes, bars and premium restaurants along its long soi. Ekkamai mixes old shops, a Japanese community and newer cafes. The two sois sit side by side, one BTS stop apart on the Sukhumvit Line.
How does the Dog in Town dog cafe work?
It is a cafe with dogs to play with, usually charging an entry fee that includes one drink. Check the opening hours and the rules for interacting with the dogs beforehand, and follow the staff's guidance for the safety of people and animals alike.
