Where to stay in
Old City (inside the moat)

Inside the moat (the old walled town) is the heart of Chiang Mai and the obvious choice for a first visit. Major temples like Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang, plus the Tha Phae Gate, are all a short walk apart. On Sunday evenings, Ratchadamnoen Road turns into a long walking street where you can eat and shop late into the night. This is a walk-first neighbourhood with narrow lanes and traffic during festivals, so strolling or renting a bicycle beats driving in. The picks below run from a family-run guesthouse to an upper-end Lanna boutique.

FAQ

Do I need to rent a car in the Old City, or is it walkable?

You don't need a car to get around. Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, Tha Phae Gate, and the Sunday Walking Street are all within walking distance of each other. Parking is scarce and the lanes are narrow, so walking or renting a bicycle is the better option. For farther trips like Doi Suthep or Nimman, a red songthaew, taxi, or Grab is easier than driving yourself.

Is the Sunday Walking Street noisy at night, and which room should I pick?

On Sunday evenings, Ratchadamnoen Road becomes a walking street from afternoon until late, and it gets busy and lively. If your hotel is on a main road you may hear some of it, though it's not as loud as a bar district. For a quieter sleep, ask for a room facing inward or pick a place set back on a smaller lane. If you enjoy the buzz, staying near the walking street is handy, since you can just step out to eat and shop.

What's the difference between the Old City and outside the moat (Nimman), and which is better?

The Old City suits first-timers who want to walk among temples and soak up the old-town feel, with local-style restaurants and cafes at friendly prices. Nimman, just west of the moat, leans toward stylish cafes, modern restaurants, and the Maya mall, which appeals to cafe-hoppers and remote workers. If your trip is mainly temples and the walking street, choose the Old City; if it's cafes and lifestyle, go for Nimman.
