Where to stay in
Ao Nang

Ao Nang is where most first-time visitors to Krabi end up staying, because it's the main beach and it bundles the restaurants, massage shops, souvenir stalls, and the island-tour pier (boats to Phi Phi and Hong Island, plus longtails across to Railay) into one strip. Roughly, it splits into the beach-road side, where you can walk straight to the sand and the boats, and the main-road side (Ao Nang Road) just behind it, packed with restaurants and tour agents. The best-view resorts tend to sit up on the cliffs and rises at the edge of the beach. One thing to know: Ao Nang's own beach is swimmable but not the clearest water around, so most people use it as a base and take boats out to nicer beaches and islands. Evenings on the beach road are lively but not a heavy nightlife scene like Patong. The picks below run from a beachfront hostel to beach-road resorts and clifftop properties.

FAQ

In Ao Nang, should I stay beachfront or on the main road?

It depends on your priority. The beach-road side, like Aonang Villa Resort, lets you walk straight to the sea and onto the tour boats, ideal if you're focused on the beach and island trips, though it costs more and gets busy in the evening. The main-road side, like Panan Krabi Resort or Red Ginger, is handy for restaurants, better value, and a touch quieter. If you want the best sea views, move up to a clifftop resort like Avani and walk down to the beach.

Can you swim at Ao Nang, or do you have to take a boat out to the islands?

You can swim at Ao Nang Beach, but the water isn't the clearest and it gets a bit muddy at low tide. So most people use Ao Nang as a base and take boats out to nicer beaches and islands, like Railay (a few minutes by longtail), Phi Phi, Hong Island, or the Separated Sea. The tour pier is right on Ao Nang Beach, so from a beach-road hotel you can walk over and hop on a boat, which makes this the most convenient launch point for island trips in Krabi.

Is Ao Nang good for families with kids?

Yes, and it's noticeably calmer than a party beach like Patong. There are family resorts with multiple pools and kids clubs to choose from, like Centara on the quieter beachfront end, or Panan with its big pool close to the restaurants. Evenings on the beach road are lively but not a heavy bar zone, so it's fine to stroll with kids, and many island tours have family-friendly programs. It's worth picking a place with a good pool, since Ao Nang's own beach is swimmable but not its strongest feature.
