Where to stay in
Phuket Old Town

Phuket Old Town is the historic heart of the island. Thalang, Dibuk, and Phang Nga roads and Soi Romanee are lined with century-old Sino-Portuguese shophouses painted in bright pastels, now home to cafes, local restaurants, galleries, and souvenir shops. On Sunday evenings Thalang Road closes for the Lard Yai walking street, and the whole strip fills with people. Most stays in the quarter are restored old buildings, from hostels and guesthouses up to boutique hotels that keep the original character. The big thing to know: this area is not on the coast. If your plan is to lie on a beach every day, the Old Town is not the right base, since the nearest beaches are a 30 to 45 minute drive away. But if you want to see the other side of Phuket, a real walkable town with great food and a lot of charm, it delivers. One more note: many old buildings have thin walls, so light sleepers should ask for a room away from the street.

FAQ

Is it easy to reach the beach from Phuket Old Town?

You'll need to drive. The Old Town is not on the coast: popular Patong Beach is about 14 km away, a 30 to 45 minute drive depending on traffic, and the southern beaches like Rawai and Nai Harn are a similar distance. The easiest options are a Grab ride or renting a car or motorbike. Local songthaews also run to Patong and other beaches from the town market, but they're slower and infrequent.

Who is Phuket Old Town best for, and what is there to do?

It suits people who enjoy exploring a town on foot, photographing the pastel heritage shophouses, sitting in cafes, and eating Phuket-style local food like Hokkien noodles, o-aew, and traditional sweets. There are house museums and galleries to wander, and on Sunday evenings the Lard Yai walking street takes over Thalang Road. Travellers who want to be on a beach every day or want Patong-style nightlife will find it quieter here.

Are stays in the Old Town noisy and hard to sleep in?

It depends on the room. Many places are old Sino-Portuguese buildings with weak soundproofing, and rooms facing Thalang Road or the main streets catch traffic noise, with some spots near bars that play live music late, especially on Friday and Saturday nights and on Sunday when the walking street runs. If you're a light sleeper, ask for an interior room or one off the main road when you book. Stays down small lanes or away from the main streets are quieter.
