Where to stay in
Maenam

Maenam is the beach for travellers who want Koh Samui at a slow pace, not the buzz of Chaweng or Bophut. The sand runs about 7km, the water is calm, and there's a Maenam Walking Street every Thursday, local restaurants at fair prices, and ferry piers (Nathon and Pralarn) for boats to Koh Phangan, which sits clearly across the water. Stays range from small hilltop hotels with sea views to beachfront bungalow resorts and 5-star pool villas. Two things to know: the seabed drops off quickly in places, so small children should stay near the shore with an adult, and the area has no real public transport, so you'll mostly rely on a rental, taxis, or hotel shuttles. Chaweng and the airport are about a 20-25 minute drive away.

FAQ

Is Maenam good for families with small children?

It works well in that the beach is quiet, safe-feeling, and uncrowded, with family-friendly beachfront resorts like Coco Palm, The Cosy, and Santiburi. But note the seabed drops off quickly in places, so small children should stay near the shore with an adult at all times. If you want genuinely shallow water for very young kids, some families lean mainly on the resort pool.

Is it easy to get to Chaweng or the airport from Maenam?

Maenam has no real public transport, so getting around mostly means a rental, songthaew, taxis, a ride-hailing app, or hotel shuttles. Chaweng and Samui Airport are about a 20-25 minute drive, and Fisherman's Village in Bophut is roughly 10-15 minutes. If you plan to head out often, renting a scooter or car is far more convenient and better value.

What is there to do in Maenam besides the beach?

The main draws are the Maenam Walking Street every Thursday with food and goods at local prices, small village restaurants and cafes, an 18-hole golf course on the hills, and ferry piers for a day trip across to Koh Phangan. If you want more restaurants and bars, Fisherman's Village in Bophut and Chaweng are a short drive away. But Maenam's appeal is its quiet, so anyone after nightlife may find it too sleepy.
